Day 19: Her Hands in Everything – Rihanna’s Music, Fashion & Fenty Empire

When you think of Rihanna, one word comes to mind—unstoppable. She’s a singer, songwriter, fashion mogul, top of the beauty industry disruptors, philanthropist, and now a mother. From her humble beginnings in Barbados to becoming a billionaire boss, Rihanna has shattered every ceiling in front of her. She’s not just making history; she’s rewriting it—on her own terms.

Humble Beginnings: From Barbados to the World

Robyn Rihanna Fenty was born on February 20, 1988, in Saint Michael, Barbados, and raised in the capital, Bridgetown. She grew up in a modest home, the eldest of three children. Witnessing her father’s struggles with addiction added tension to her childhood. But despite the hardships, she found solace in music, often singing to escape reality.

Rihanna’s life changed at 15 when she auditioned for music producer Evan Rogers during his trip to Barbados. Her raw talent and star power were undeniable. Rogers saw something special in her and invited her to the U.S. to record demos. In 2005, a young Rihanna—bright-eyed and full of dreams—signed with Def Jam Records after auditioning for Jay-Z, who was then the label’s president. Legend has it he made her sign the contract on the spot because he didn’t want another label to snatch her up.

The Rise of a Pop Icon

Rihanna wasted no time proving she was a force to be reckoned with. She burst onto the scene in 2005 with her debut single, Pon de Replay, a Caribbean-infused club anthem that immediately set her apart. I definitely remember winding my hips to Pon de Replay in the club back in my party days—it was a DJ’s go-to track, always on rotation in the clubs and on the radio. That was just the beginning.

Over the years, the “Rihanna success story” evolved from being a teenage pop princess into a global superstar. Her discography is stacked with chart-topping hits:

  • 2007: Umbrella (feat. Jay-Z) – The song cemented her status as an A-lister and earned her first Grammy.
  • 2010: Only Girl (In the World) – Won the Grammy for Best Dance Recording.
  • 2011: We Found Love (feat. Calvin Harris) – A global dance anthem that topped the Billboard Hot 100 for 10 consecutive weeks.
  • 2012: Diamonds – A powerhouse ballad that became one of her signature songs.
  • 2016: Work (feat. Drake) – A dancehall-infused track that took over the world.

With nine Grammys, 13 American Music Awards, 12 Billboard Music Awards, and the second-best-selling digital artist of all time, Rihanna’s impact on music is undeniable.

Music Hiatus & The Album Fans Are Desperate For
After releasing her critically acclaimed 2016 album Anti—which included hits like Needed Me and Love on the Brain—Rihanna stepped away from music. Fans begged for new music, but she had bigger plans.

She teased us with a return when she dropped Lift Me Up on October 28, 2022, as part of the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack. A heartfelt tribute to Chadwick Boseman, the song earned nominations for both a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for Best Original Song.

But despite this, Rihanna still hasn’t given us R9—the album fans have been waiting nearly a decade. The Navy (her fanbase) is getting restless, but Rihanna moves on her own time.

Rihanna’s Fearless Fashion: The Style Icon

Rihanna’s style is the perfect reflection of her personality—bold, fearless, and unapologetic. She effortlessly blends high fashion with streetwear, frequently pushing boundaries with daring looks that are both glamorous and edgy. Whether she’s dripping in couture at the Met Gala, rocking oversized streetwear for a casual outing, or redefining maternity fashion, Rihanna’s wardrobe is unpredictable yet always iconic. She masters mixing luxury with everyday wear, making statement pieces look effortlessly cool.

Confidence is at the core of her fashion choices. She gravitates toward silhouettes that flatter her body, incorporating bold cuts, sheer fabrics, and revealing elements that demand attention. Rihanna doesn’t just wear clothes—she owns them. Her ability to command any look makes her one of the most-watched celebrities on red carpets, and she’s delivered some of the most unforgettable fashion moments of all time.

Her 2015 Met Gala moment in the iconic yellow Guo Pei gown—dubbed the “omelet dress” by the internet—was a show-stopper, proving she could dominate any fashion conversation. Two years later, she took it a step further by arriving in a bold, avant-garde Comme des Garçons masterpiece at the 2017 Met Gala, making it clear that Rihanna doesn’t just follow trends—she creates them.

From Superstar to Billionaire Boss

Rihanna didn’t just take a break from music—she built an empire. In 2017, she launched Fenty Beauty, shaking up the beauty industry with a game-changing foundation line featuring 40 shades (now expanded). It was a direct challenge to an industry that often neglected darker skin tones. No one had seen a makeup brand cater to chocolate and dark chocolate skin tones like Fenty Beauty diversity did. The result? A cultural reset.

Then came Savage x Fenty, a lingerie brand that redefined sexy with an emphasis on inclusivity. Unlike traditional lingerie brands, Savage x Fenty features models of all sizes, races, and gender identities. And let’s not forget her iconic Savage x Fenty fashion shows, which have entirely outshined Victoria’s Secret.

In 2019, she made history as the first Black woman in business to lead a luxury fashion house under LVMH with her brand Fenty. Though the luxury line was paused, it further stamped Rihanna’s place in fashion.

Today, she’s a billionaire, largely thanks to Fenty Beauty and Savage x Fenty, making her one of the most successful Black entrepreneurs and the wealthiest female musician in the world.

Super Bowl Comeback & Motherhood

In February 2023, Rihanna returned to the stage in the most Rihanna way possible—by announcing her second pregnancy during the Super Bowl halftime show. Dressed in an all-red custom Loewe jumpsuit, she delivered a mesmerizing performance that had everyone talking. Even while carrying life, she reminded the world why she’s one of the greatest entertainers of our time.

Motherhood has only made her more powerful. In May 2022, she welcomed her first child with rapper A$AP Rocky, and in August 2023, she gave birth to their second son.

Giving Back: The Clara Lionel Foundation

Rihanna isn’t just about making money—she gives back. In 2012, she founded the Clara Lionel Foundation (CLF), named after her grandparents. The foundation focuses on global education, emergency response programs, and climate change resilience. Rihanna has donated millions to disaster relief efforts and underserved communities.

In 2017, Harvard named her Humanitarian of the Year, and in 2021, she was officially declared a National Hero of Barbados. No matter how successful she becomes, she remains deeply connected to her home country.

Overcoming Controversies & Adversities

Rihanna has faced her share of challenges, including public scrutiny, heartbreak, and industry politics. Most notably, in 2009, she became the face of domestic violence awareness after her assault by then-boyfriend Chris Brown. Rather than letting it define her, she used her platform to advocate for survivors.

She’s also had legal battles, including a lawsuit against her father for exploiting the Fenty name and a lawsuit against her former accountants for mismanagement. Each challenge only made her stronger, more business-savvy, and even more protective of her empire.

The Legacy of Rihanna: HerStory in the Making

Rihanna is not just an artist, a CEO, or a trendsetter—she’s a movement. She represents Black women in business breaking barriers, taking up space, and setting new standards in music, Black owned business, and beauty.

From a little girl in Barbados to a self-made billionaire, Rihanna proves that you don’t have to choose one lane—you can have your hands in everything. And while we’re all impatiently waiting for R9, one thing is clear: whenever she does return to music, it’ll be on her own terms—just like everything else in her legendary career.
