For day 1 of 28 days of Black HerStory, it is only fitting that our Black blog begins by celebrating the one and only trailblazing Madam C.J. Walker, a visionary entrepreneur and the first Black millionaire woman in America. After experiencing hair loss, she developed a line of haircare for Black women, pioneering an industry that continues to thrive today. Her first products included Madam Walker’s Wonderful Hair Grower, a scalp-conditioning treatment, along with shampoos and ointments designed to promote healthy hair growth. She marketed her products through a highly effective direct sales model, training thousands of Black women as sales agents in what became known as the “Walker System.” This door-to-door approach and hands-on customer education laid the foundation for modern direct marketing strategies in the Black beauty industry.
Walker’s influence can still be seen in today’s billion-dollar Black beauty industry market, inspiring brands that cater to natural hair and textured styles. The Madam C.J. Walker brand continues to exist today, with some of her original formulas influencing contemporary haircare for Black women product lines. Now part of Sundial Brands, a beauty and personal care company known for its use of natural ingredients and commitment to inclusive beauty, the brand is in the company of other well-known names like SheaMoisture and Nubian Heritage. Sundial Brands was a Black owned business until its acquisition by Unilever in 2017.In January 2022, Unilever launched MADAM by Madam C.J. Walker through its Sundial Brands division to honor Walker’s legacy. This modern haircare line is designed for textured hair, featuring a range of products inspired by her original formulas. Although the Madam C.J. Walker brand is no longer Black owned business, her legacy and the products she pioneered continue to inspire and shape the hair care industry, honoring her vision of empowering Black female entrepreneurs through beauty and entrepreneurship. Madam C.J. Walker products, including MADAM by Madam C.J.
